Pre-Con Workshops
Wednesday, December 7, 2011
1:00 – 4:00 pm
Participants are welcome to register for pre-conference workshops in addition to their full conference registration. An additional $100 fee applies.
PreCon 1: “Whatevs…Sex and the Teenage Brain” by Jane Fleishman
What is going on with teenagers’ brains? With so much stimulation, they get a whole raft of information that can either set them adrift or harbor them. As they “stumble upon” sexuality information, what is going on in their brains? With a highly interactive and information-packed approach, we will focus on adolescent brain development and sexual behavior. $100.
PreCon 2: “Sex Ed Games That Teach” by Melissa Keyes DiGioia & Jessica Shields
Can you make an interactive PowerPoint Jeopardy board or use the Internet to create a crossword puzzle? Are your students smarter than 6th graders when it comes to HIV knowledge? Sex Ed Games that Teach is a workshop that demonstrates how to educate about a diversity of sexuality topics utilizing gaming strategies. Participants will gain the knowledge and skills to modify existing popular games using current technology to capture students’ attention when addressing sexuality topics. Deal? Or no deal? $100.
Precon 3: “Teaching Safer Sex” by Bill Taverner, MA, CSE & Susan Milstein, EdD, MCHES, CSE
In the 1980s, the earliest “prevention” efforts to address HIV and AIDS focused on “T-Cell” education: lectures on the biology of HIV with excruciating detail and little discussion of behavioral measures needed to avoid it. The CFLE transformed the pedagogy and the field with its groundbreaking Teaching Safer Sex. Now in its third generation, participants will get a sneak peak of classic and new lessons from the forthcoming two-volume edition of Teaching Safer Sex. $100.
